16 Day Route 66 Tour – Dallas to Los Angeles
This tour is perfect for the Australia based rugby teams due to the new non-stop flights between Sydney and Dallas. This 16 night journey starts off in Dallas, travel up to Oklahoma, take Route 66 through Amarillo, Albuquerque, Grand Canyon, Laughlin and on to Los Angeles.
Day 1 – Arrive into Dallas
You will arrive into Dallas/Ft. Worth airport, and be transferred to your hotel via private coach. The afternoon is free to explore Dallas.
Day 2 – Dallas Fixture
Grab breakfast at the hotel before jumping on your tour of Dallas. Today is the opening game of your USA tour with a team that matches your players in age and ability. Follow up the match with a friendly barbeque or pint with your host team.
Day 3 – Dallas Sightseeing
Spend the day enjoying the sites of Dallas. Recommendations include visiting the Sixth Floor Museum (site where Oswald shot JFK), the Zero Gravity Amusement Park, Frontier of Flight Museum and if you happen to be there at the right time, the Texas State Fair. Dallas is a great place to catch an American sporting event at American Airlines Stadium for basketball and hockey, Gerald P Ford Stadium to watch the Cowboy (football) or baseball at the Texas Rangers Field at Arlington.
Day 4 – Dallas to Oklahoma City
Either fly (55 minutes) or jump on a bus (4.5 hours) headed for Oklahoma City. Head to the National Stockyard Exchange, then enjoy dinner at Cattleman’s Steakhouse.
Day 5 – Oklahoma City Fixture
Grab breakfast at the hotel, then enjoy Oklahoma City at your leisure. Today is the second fixture of your USA tour with a team that matches your players in age and ability. Follow up the match with a friendly meal and socializing.
Day 6 – Oklahoma City Route 66 to Amarillo
Today you start your journey along Route 66. It is a 4.5 hour drive without stopping. You first stop along the road will be Elk City, OK where you will find a large museum complex with a pioneer village, the National Route 66 and Transportation Museum (great photo ops). Hop back on the bus for your 2.5 hour drive to Amarillo. Check into your hotel, then enjoy a steak diner at the infamous Big Texan.
Day 7 – Route 66 Amarillo to Albuquerque
Wake up and have a traditional US diner breakfast. Jump on the bus for the your 285 mile journey. You will stop at Cadillac Ranch before continuing your journey to Albuquerque. Settle into your hotel, and don’t forget to try the famous green chile while in New Mexico.
Day 8 – Albuquerque Fixture
Start off the day with a tour of Albuquerque. End the day with your third fixture with a local rugby club followed by a meal and socializing.
Day 9 – Albuquerque – Flagstaff
Jump on the bus in the morning to continue down Route 66. Stop in Gallup, NM for lunch and arrive into Flagstaff in the late afternoon.
Day 10 – Flagstaff Fixture
Spend the morning exploring the Flagstaff area. Activity options include Flagstaff Extreme, get close to wildlife at Bearzona Wildlife Park or simply explore old Flagstaff and it’s railroad history. That afternoon, attend the fourth fixture of your US tour, followed by a light meal and socializing.
Day 11 – Grand Canyon
Today is dedicated to exploring the Grand Canyon. When done, continue along Route 66 to Laughlin, a gambling city along the Colorado River.
Day 12 – Final Stretch: Laughlin to Los Angeles
Check out of your Laughlin hotel and board the bus for Los Angeles. Stop midway in Barstow to enjoy a California classic, In-N-Out Burger. Arrive into Los Angeles mid-afternoon. Congratulations, you have just completed 2170 km along Route 66! You evening will be free to do as you wish.
Day 13 – Los Angeles
Start your Los Angeles experience with a city tour of LA and Hollywood. In the evening, take in a sporting event either at Staples Center (Lakers, Clippers or LA Kings) or Dodger Stadium.
Day 14 – Los Angeles Fixture
The morning you are free to explore Los Angeles. That evening, attend the fifth fixture of your US tour, followed by a light meal and socializing.
Day 15 – Los Angeles Sightseeing
There are many options to fill your day in Los Angeles. You can head to Disneyland, Universal Studios, or hanging out at the beach. Tonight is a farewell dinner to cap off the tour.
Day 16 – Fly Back Home
